- IMAP allows more functionality than POP3
- You have the option of retrieving just the body of the message without the attachments
- In certain cases, performance is better than with POP3

- Option to retrieve only the header for messages that have already been read
- The IDLE command is supported!
- The IDLE command allows you to stay connected to the server and receive almost instant notification
